A building that once served as a carriage stable, a wood shop and, most recently, the home of J & B Eastern Saw & Tool Service, has been transformed into South Philadelphia’s newest brewery and brewpub, Second District Brewing.
Named after the city council district it resides in, the brewery maintains much of its industrial aesthetic with original hard wood floors and exposed brick walls while making creative reuse of existing materials found on site – the wooden planks that make up the back bar wall spent decades serving as floor boards upstairs. A hand-poured concrete bar top, collection of antique mirrors, and three garage doors pay tribute to Philadelphia’s industrial heritage.
"Step beyond the bar into the back and you’ll be in the midst of the bi-level brewhouse with an array of barrels throughout, which will soon produce great beers to come." - Shane Fisher, Breweries in Pennsylvnia
